Women are not encouraged to want. Wanting is synonymous with lack and desperation. Women wanting has been portrayed as a woman who is not thankful. Women aren't allowed to want in this society. Girls aren't allowed to want, women aren't allowed to want, we are not allowed to want.
I reject that. I hate it. I'm over it. I think you are over it, too.
I don't want little girls to get the message they aren't allowed to ask for what they want. I don't want little girls to see me and think it's okay to be silently relenting. I refuse to give my girlfriends strength behind closed doors but let a system tell them they cannot ask for what they desire. I want you to want. I want you to drive for your wants. I want you to surge forward and ask for what makes your heart full and your shoulders proud. I want to be among a team of warrior women who ask and who work and who push and who are a lot. I want. I want to push back against the forces that tell me it is okay to succeed but it is not okay to want to succeed.
Which has led me to this:
A Wanting Party.
“For far too long we have been seduced into
walking a path that did not lead us to ourselves.
For far too long we have said yes when we wanted
to say no. And for far too long we have said
no when we desperately wanted to say yes. . . .
When we don't listen to our intuition,
we abandon our souls. And we abandon our souls
because we are afraid if we don't,
others will abandon us.”
― Terry Tempest Williams, When Women Were Birds: Fifty-four Variations on Voice
